Theme: Are We There Yet?

Initial Ideas…

  • 15Mar_11x17poster_ThemeWhen we first started talking about March’s environment, we thought we would mimic the Theme Graphic from 252 Basics.
  • We considered projecting the VW Bus image onto insulation foam, enlarging it and having one of our volunteer artists paint it to look like the one in the image.
  • We were going to paint the backdrop a beige/tan color.
  • The VW bus would be pinned onto the center of the backdrop.
  • Extending from the bus in various directions, we would create striped roads similar to those in the image. These stripes would be made from colored duct tape that matched the colors in the image.

That was going to be it… although, we could not get the idea out of our heads that we would love to have a VW Bus in the environment for kids to sit in and take photos when they arrived each week. As I sent out my email to my creative team and asked for their thoughts, another idea began to form. This particular idea would give us a version of the VW Bus photo-op idea, so we decided to go with it. We are really excited about where we are headed. You can read about the details below and I’ll be posting photos this week.

Where We’ve Landed…

  • We will be painting the backdrop to resemble a horizon line… blue sky and green grass.
  • IMG_1222The blue sky will have clouds that we saved from our Respect series back in September of 2012.
  • We will paint a road using perspective in the center of the horizon.
  • The road will continue onto the stage by adding dashed yellow lines down the center of the stage and lines on either side to mark the shoulders.
  • We’ll use the green astroturf carpet that we used for our Friendship and Gratitude series on either side of the road to continue the grass.
  • IMG_1991We’ll have a road sign that names five cities and their projected mileage.
    • The city names will be taken from the main idea of the bottom line for each week and the mileage will be the date of the Sunday we learn about that bottom line.
    • For example: The first city might say “Think Twice, KY  – 1 mile” and Week 2 might say “Trueville, NY  – 8 miles,” etc.
  •  And our favorite part  – we will have the front half of a VW Bus coming out of the center of our backdrop!!!
    • IMG_0676The same volunteer that created our Live Forevinator last February is creating the VW Bus for us.
    • He’s creating a plywood frame and then using insulation foam to cover it and achieve the curves, etc.
    • It will be painted orange or yellow to match the colors in the graphic.
    • It will have a seat, steering wheel, lights and gadgets that are functional.
    • The driver’s side door will open so kids can get in and have their photo taken.

I can’t wait to see the finished product and will be sure to post photos when it is complete!
