21 Mar Peace – Conflict Kitchen – April 2015 – Our Plan!
Life App: Peace—proving you care more about each other than winning an argument.
Theme: Conflict Kitchen
Date: April, 2015
What are you up to?
Hopefully, you’ve shared what you are planning for April’s environment in this post. If not – be sure to share your ideas in the comment section below!
We’d also love to hear about any special plans you have for Easter this year. We have a big event coming up on the 28th that we are super EGG-cited about! It’s our first ever “EGG-stravaganza” and we are neck-deep in plastic Easter eggs and jelly beans! I’ll be sharing about this event in a separate post, but for now – let’s see what’s cooking for the Life App of Peace. See what I did there? Cooking… Conflict Kitchen… 🙂
Extreme Stage Makeover
*Disclaimer – This post reflects our plan on paper, but as you have probably experienced – plans on paper are always subject to change. We begin construction on Monday, so I’ll post photos and keep you up to date on what is working and what needs tweaking. 🙂
Our ideas for this month come from the suggestions made in the Get Ready section of Week 1’s Large Group Script from 252 Basics. We are hoping to turn our stage into a “kitchen” for the month of April! Here are some things we are planning to do to transform the space…
The Backdrop:
- We’ll paint the five insulation foam panels of our backdrop with black paint to resemble a large chalk board.
- We’ll paint the lower third of all five black panels with silver metallic paint to resemble stainless steel appliances, etc.
- We might spray paint this part of the panels. I think spray paint colors offer more options that resemble stainless steel than latex paint and since the black paint will act as a primer, the spray paint won’t shrink the foam.
*TIP: When you use spray paint directly on insulation foam, it shrinks the foam and gives it an unusual shape. This can be a cool effect at times (as is the case with the side edges of these picture frames or the EPIC letters), but not when you want your panels to retain their sharp edges and shape.
- We’ll create a shelf/counter out of insulation foam. This counter will attach to the backdrop at the top of the silver paint line separating the “chalk board” from the “stainless.” The counter will extend about 1 foot from the backdrop and will also be painted to resemble stainless steel.
- For the silver (stainless) part of each panel, we’ll embellish each panel to resemble something in a kitchen.
- One panel will be an oven, so we’ll add knobs, a handle, etc. on the front.
- Two or three panels will be cabinets with hardware, etc.
- Another panel might resemble a dishwasher or another oven.
- On the top portion of the stainless counter where we paint the panels to resemble a chalk board, we will use paint pens to write menus, shopping lists, etc. on either side of the center panel.
- On the center panel, we’ll mimic the Cutthroat Kitchen oversized utensils by enlarging the images on insulation foam, carving them with a hot knife and painting them white. We’ll hang them center stage over the “counter” and on the center panel of the backdrop.
The Stage:
- We’ll create a kitchen island or workspace by placing a 6’x4′ table center stage in front of the backdrop. We’ll place the table a few feet in front of the backdrop, so people can stand behind it each week for the challenges, etc.
- We’ll use insulation foam to encase the table and paint all of the insulation foam silver to resemble stainless steel.
- On the front of the kitchen island, we’ll hang a photo tex sticker of the theme image from 252 Basics Large Group Visuals.
- On either side of the kitchen island, we’ll have wire shelving stocked with small appliances, kitchen utensils, baskets with plastic food, flour and sugar sacks, bowls, etc.
I am very excited about creating a kitchen on our stage and think the kids will have a blast coming up to work in it each week during the openers.
