24 Sep Monica’s Secret Closet

On Thursday nights between 1994-2004, you could usually find me sitting in front of my TV watching the widely acclaimed TV sitcom Friends. I am a huge fan of that show and still watch it regularly today. Interestingly enough, most of my teammates also love this show and as a result, we often find ourselves inserting quotes from our favorite friends (Ross, Monica, Joey, Rachel, Phoebe or Chandler) into regular conversation.

A few years back, our Children & Student Team Leader, Nick Blevins, began calling the storage area behind our stage “Monica’s Closet” – a name gleaned from a favorite Friends episode.

This is a reference to the episode known as “The One With The Secret Closet.” In this episode, Chandler finds out that Monica (who is usually overly organized and neat) has a secret closet that is locked. Chandler goes crazy trying to figure out what is behind the closet door and when he finally breaks in, he finds out that it houses a giant mess of stuff that Monica doesn’t know what to do with.

Monica’s Closet Can Form in Our Resource Area

Our elementary environment is held in a multi-purpose space, therefore we have to take down all of our set elements and décor each week and store them backstage, along with all of the props, costumes and small group resources we utilize. To add to the madness, our preschool team stores all of their small group resources backstage AND we’ve tried to set up a green room for our large group leaders within this mess. As a result, this space can become quite cluttered.

I do my best to keep it in order, but there are often days (okay, maybe weeks and months) that go by where I am unable to keep up with it. Items get shoved backstage without being organized or put back in their proper place and before we know it, backstage begins to look a bit like Monica’s Closet. Take a look for yourself at the picture on the right.

How about you all?

How do you organize your resources and better yet, how do you keep it all organized?
