Theme: Know How: Get Your Head in the Game!
Date: January, 2014

Time Flies!

2014 is just one day away. I can’t believe it. The holidays have put me a bit further behind than usual with set design, but it always manages to get done-right? I hope so!

Ideas!

Our plan is listed below. I’ve also included info from 3 leaders who shared their plan for January’s decor either on Facebook or on the comment section of January’s “Let’s Collaborate” post.

I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with. Olympic themes are always so much fun! Be sure to share your process, photos and whatever you’ve got going on Facebook, Twitter or right here.

Our Plan

For this month, we are reusing some elements and creating some new things. Here’s our to-do list:

  • Paint 10 insulation foam panels sky blue for backdrop.
  • IMG_2761Re-use the mountain range from our summer Base Camp series. Stretch the mountain range across 8 of the 10 panels.
  • Create sillouhette images of skiiers, snowboarders, etc. from 252 Basics weekly bottom line graphics. Project images to desired size. Trace onto black craft paper and cut out. Pin images across mountain range.
  • Have a Photo Tex sticker of the theme graphic made. Stick onto foam core, cut out to match shape and create 3-D effect. Pin to backdrop at center stage.
  • Use floral craft foam wreaths for Olympic rings. Spray paint to match authentic colors. Cut and attach to create a 3-D Olympic ring sculpture. Rings will hang on the two panels that do not have mountains.
  • Create leader boards for each service time on white presentation board in graph form. Our small groups chose their countries yesterday, so they will be represented on the leader boards by their country’s flags (along the side axis). Weeks 1-4 will be displayed along the top axis and a point total will be kept for the large group games each week to see who will win the Gold, Silver and Bronze at the end of the month. Small medals will be given at the end of the month and maybe some candy to the groups that win.
  • Hang the leader board under the Olympic ring structure.
  • Possible sign at our registration area to say “Welcome to Discovery Island’s Winter Olympic Games”
  • Possible table torches will sit on each registration table.
  • Possible flag banners will hang at the registration area.
  • Small groups will create flags during Plug-In on Week 1. These will hang in the environment all month long.

January SetHere is a picture of our stage for January. We are not having kid’s programming on Dec. 29th so I was able to get it done a little early! I used plastic table clothes for the green and blue strips. They are actually stapled to the wall. I scrunched them a little and then cut strips and scrunched those to add a little dimension. I used a projector and traced all of the images, and letters. The snowflakes are on poster board and then have clear glitter on them and the silhouettes are traced on regular bulletin board paper. The silhouettes and letters are traced from the 252 graphics for this month. The white “snow” at the bottom is just batting. It was super cheap and not too hard to pull off!

Ideas From Katie in our comment section of Let’s Collaborate:

We are going to do the big snowflakes as suggested in the large group script. We also found a cool picture of stringing cotton balls on fishing line to make snow. We will either use hula hoops or something else round to make the olympic rings, and we found super cute flag banners to hang across the stage with the flags of different countries. Of course since it’s still December, we won’t have the finished product up until after the new year.

Ideas From Kim in our comment section of Let’s Collaborate:

We have assigned each class K-5 countries and are making life size flags to hang over the balcony. With the U.S. flag and Russia flag on the focal wall with the backdrop being the green and blue with a white silhouette of a snowboarder with olympic rings above that. We will also be designing our own olympic torch.

You can interact with these leaders, ask questions or get further details about their plans in the comment section of our Let’s Collaborate post here.

Can’t wait to see everyone’s finished products! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!
